Feinstein on National Youth Anti-Drug Media Campaign

Received this email from Senator Dianne Feinstein on November 9, 2005:

Dear Peter:

Thank you for writing to me about the National Youth Anti-Drug
Media Campaign. I appreciate your thoughts on this program and
welcome the opportunity to respond to your letter.

Since 1997 the National Youth Anti-Drug Media Campaign has
used a variety of media outlets to educate children about the dangers of
using drugs. By law, every federal dollar that is spent on these outlets is
matched with public service announcements. Some television networks
have fulfilled their obligations in part by incorporating anti-drug
messages in their shows.

In my view, the solution to eliminating our nation's drug
problem will come only through a combination of no-nonsense
enforcement, education, prevention and drug treatment. Please know
that I understand your concerns regarding the effectiveness of the
National Youth Anti-Drug Media Campaign. In light of recent studies
that call into question the value of the campaign, especially amongst
college students, Congress may indeed make changes or eliminate the
program altogether. I will certainly keep your thoughts in mind as I
work with the other members of the Senate Judiciary Committee to craft
common sense anti-drug legislation.

Again, thank you for writing. I hope that you will continue to
write on matters of importance to you. If you have any further concerns
or comments, please feel free to contact my Washington, D.C. office at
(202) 224-3841.

Sincerely yours,

Dianne Feinstein
United States Senator
